The relationship between chiropractic, the immune system and the nervous system has been discussed for hundreds of years. Now the latest research shows they are even more closely linked than previously thought.
Regular chiropractic treatment helps maintain a strong and healthy immune system with chiropractic patients having 200% greater immune competence over a five year period than those not under chiropractic care.

Our immune systems defend our bodies against invaders. They are one of our strongest lines of defence. For the system to perform well, it requires balance and harmony, something regular chiropractic helps it achieve. It does this by keeping the body’s paths clear and free of any blockages.

Dr. Pero, a professor of medicine at New York University, compared the immune systems of those under Chiropractic care, the general population, and those with cancer or other serious diseases over a 3 year period. He found that the Chiropractic patients, who had received care for over 5 years, have a 200% greater immune competence than those who did not have Chiropractic, and 400% greater than those with cancer and other serious diseases. He also noted that the greater immune system response of those under Chiropractic care did not diminish with age.

Early this week, we shared some great tips for summertime safety, including absorbing vitamin D safely, some natural alternatives to sunscreen, managing chlorine levels and bug sprays.

Watch for dehydration. 
Some of the signs of dehydration are dry mouth, weakness, dizziness and confusion—and there are actually a lot of causes of dehydration; low carb diets, prescription medication, stress, pregnancy, breastfeeding, exercise, supplements, alcohol—just to name a few. Sounds overwhelming, but there are some ways you can guard against dehydration this summer. Munch on fruits high in water content, like watermelon, pears, pineapple and grapefruit. Veggies to choose are leafy greens, celery, squash and cabbage. And even though it’s obvious, we all need the reminder: make sure you’re getting at least one eight-ounce glass of water per hour—even more if you’re outside all day.

Walking, seeing the great outdoors. 
The great outdoors are an excellent way to spend a weekend. Be sure to take a first aid kit and look ahead for the weather so you can bring the right equipment. Also, it’s important to choose your shoes wisely, especially if you’ll be hiking/walking long distances.

Choose healthy grilling options. 
Summer just isn’t summer with a barbeque or two. Fish is always an excellent option. If you want to pick some beef or poultry—the labels can get quite confusing. Remember that “natural” doesn’t mean anything; always look for “organic” grass-fed meats which are leaner and contain more nutrients than their grain-fed counterparts.

Summer Safety Tips, Part I With The AMI Clinic Bedford


Summer is here in all of its glory, getting outside and enjoying the season is what it’s all about. Prepare yourself and your family with some healthy summer tips—and enjoy these hot months before winter’s back, knocking at the door.


Absorb some vitamin D safely. You may be aware of all the health benefits vitamin D can offer—improved bone health, increased energy, boosted mood—but do you know exactly how to get it? The absolute best way to get your vitamin D fix is through the sun. The body absorbs UVB rays and produces the Vit D as a hormone. Safe amount of sunlight varies from person to person based on skin type, skin colour, location and environmental factors. It’s always best to think less.

Pick some natural sunscreen alternatives. It’s important to avoid summertime risks like sunburn—but be sure to read those ingredients. The Environmental Working Group advises that you avoid oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate.
You could also look into zinc oxide sunscreen, a safe, natural alternative to commercial sunscreens. And stock up on your greens, watermelons and tomatoes! Leafy veggies contain carotenoids, which prevent sunburn, and watermelons and tomatoes offer lycopene, which also provides natural sunburn protection.
Manage chlorine exposure. Some studies have indicated that there are risks associated with chlorine—but don’t get out of the pool just yet. One of the major issues with chlorine is that when it combines with common contaminants (hair product, sweat, makeup, lotion), it creates potentially dangerous disinfection by-products, known as DBPs. So instead of skipping the visit to the pool (and missing out on that great physical activity), limit your exposure to DBPs by showering before swimming and immediately after.

Know your bug spray options. Nothing derails a nice summer evening outdoors like a group of persistent bugs. Thankfully, there are some ways to keep the bugs at bay—but, unfortunately, there are some risks that come with certain bug sprays, especially those containing DEET. While the Environmental Protection Agency has deemed DEET safe for adults and kids over three months, some research has linked it to seizures and mood disorders.Be sure you’re only using a spray with less than 30 percent DEET concentration, or try sprays with Picaridin. Even better, see if some natural choices work for you, like oil of lemon, eucalyptus, lemongrass and cinnamon. Mix 10 to 20 drops of the essential oil with two tablespoons of organic olive oil, sunflower oil or witch hazel. Dab on as needed.
