Daylight savings – the time of the year for more time?

Daylight-saving time change is this Sunday, March 25th, 2018 where we will move our clocks ahead 1 hour. In general the “spring ahead” is more difficult for our body’s to adjust to then “falling back” because it means 1 less hour of sleep. Moving our clocks in either direction changes the principal time cue (light) for setting and resetting our 24-hour natural cycle, or circadian rhythm. 

Here are a few tips to help minimize any issues associated with this weekend’s time change:
·         Have a fixed bedtime and wake-up time.
·         Avoid napping during the day.
·         Avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine right before bed.
·         Avoid eating heavy, spicy, or sugary food before bed.
·         Get regular exercise—but not right before bed.
·         Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet.
·         Avoid using your bedroom as a workroom.
·         Turn off electronics thirty to sixty minutes before bedtime.


On the subject time, the lay person does not understand the physiological time frames of the human body or biology. When the human body is carrying an injury or dis-ease, an individual must do the right things in order to allow the body to heal. These solutions are commonly very logical and straight forward whether its changing sleep hygiene, changing your dietary intake or making changes to your movements day to day.

Often when I highlight the areas of change specific for my patient to recover, we do all the correct things yet after 2 weeks the patient’s headaches do not remit or their neck pain hasn’t gone or their sciatic pains have not improved.

What does this mean?

For physiological change to happen even if your doing the correct things to improve your own health the missing part of that equation is TIME.

Here is an example: if a patient has been working in an office job for 10 years and lives a sedentary lifestyle and over 5 years developed back pain and over the last year developed radiating pain into the back of the leg and calf.

If that individual gets treatment for their low back and pelvis, starts eating a healthier, non-inflammatory diet and starts exercising then how long will it take to recover?

The answer for sure is not 2 weeks.

Now convalescence time obviously varies depending on the condition and the person. An active 20 year old with sciatica will have a remarkably different recovery period than a sedentary 60 year old with sciatica.





This is where a chiropractors expertise comes into play as they will be able to specifically identify what your problem is and how long it will likely take to recover.




As Hippocrates one said, “It is important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what disease a person has."

How Headaches can stem from the neck - “oh I get the normal amount of Headaches”

I had a patient come in to the clinic last week and when going through a medical history I questioned her if she ever got any headaches, I heard the unnervingly common reply of 
“oh I get the normal number of headaches, every month.” 

But getting a headache should not be normal.

Headaches can vary so much in nature, from the location of the headache (frontal, temporal, occipital) to the intensity and character of pain (dull throb, sharp lancinating, deep pressure) and the duration.

At its most basic a headache is your brains inability to adapt to stress, as discussed before we have 3 stressors: physical, chemical and emotional.

In fact, there are many different causes and stressors of headaches and often the primary importance is understanding where the headache comes from. Whether from dehydration or a chemical response to sugar for example. Considerable debate still surrounds the cause and underlying pathology of a migraine and several theories have been proposed.

An often-overlooked cause of headaches is from the cervical spine.

A common cause of headaches can stem from the cervical spine called a cervicogenic headache. Sometimes these headaches mimic migraine headache symptoms. Initially, pain may begin intermittently, spread to one side (unilateral) of the patient's head, and become almost continuous. Furthermore, pain can be exacerbated by neck movement or a particular neck position (eg, eyes focused on a computer monitor).



Certain spinal nerves structures are involved in many cervicogenic headaches. Spinal nerves are signal transmitters that enable communication between the brain and the body via the spinal cord. At each level of the cervical spine is a set of spinal nerves; one on the left side and one on the right of the spine. C1, C2 and/or C3 may be involved in development of cervicogenic headaches because these nerves enable function (movement) and sensation of the head and neck. Nerve compression can cause inflammation and pain.


A cervicogenic headache presents as a steady, non-throbbing pain at the back and base of the skull, sometimes extending downward into the neck and between the shoulder blades. Pain may be felt behind the brow and forehead, even though the problem originates from the cervical spine.

Pain usually begins after a sudden neck movement, such as a sneeze. Along with head and/or neck pain, symptoms may include:
  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Pain in one or both arms

Beast from the east causing neck strain and low back pain?

With the Beast from the East hitting Britain with force its having a big impact on the paths and the roads.

Slips on the footpath

When it comes to pedestrians and walking along the icy footpaths watch out for falling over, the most common fall on the ice is a slip straight onto the sacrum or coccyx. This type of impact trauma from the bottom of the pelvis has a knock on effect up the spine causing the pelvis or lumbar vertebrae to shift out of position.



Most people feel a bruised pain that subsides but if this misalignment goes untreated it will cause issues in the future.

Nerve pressure is like a water bucket filling to the brim not a problem until it reaches a threshold when it becomes painful this could either take weeks, months or years. Getting checked up by your chiropractor can make sure your body heals the right way preventing any problems in the future, not to mention helping you recover faster from the injury itself.



Road Traffic accidents
The more serious and dangerous issue is on the roads ideally choose not to drive in these conditions if you can. But no surprise that there are more accidents in this weather. Car accidents can lead to whiplash which is one of the most common neck injuries people can get.

Whiplash is the common term for "cervical acceleration-deceleration injury." This refers to damage done to the muscles, ligaments, tendons, discs, nerves and vertebrae of the neck as the result of sudden hyperextension and hyperflexion of the neck. 

When a patient experiences a sudden force that moves the neck forcefully backward then forward, the ligaments and tendons that hold the vertebrae in correct alignment are damaged, causing the vertebrae to change their position and irritate the adjacent nerve roots. This in turn can cause impairment of the function of the body parts that are controlled by these nerves.


The symptoms of a whiplash injury can vary greatly in terms of onset and severity, but some common symptoms associated with it are the following: loss or reduction in ability to move the neck
neck stiffness and pain, pain in arms and hands, muscle spasm, dizziness and/or vertigo, fatigue, blurred or altered vision, ringing in ears, sleep disturbances, numbness/pins and needles in arms and hands

Remember: Symptoms may appear immediately after the whiplash injury or there may be a delayed onset of symptoms, which can prevent a person from associating the symptoms with an injury. This often postpones the patient from receiving timely treatment.

Valentines Day Blog


Valentine’s Day is a day to honour your loved one. Flowers, candy and gifts are traditional, but when you give a gift of health, you are telling your loved one that you care way beyond material possessions. It is a touching gesture that you want your loved one to be the best they can be and free from pain. There is no greater gift than that. If you are not sure chiropractic is right for you or your loved one, you will be surprised how many ailments can be alleviated by chiropractic. Your loved one is worth the gift of health.

  1. Talk Openly About It: Brushing the subject of chronic pain under the carpet is about as useful as a pair of fingerless oven gloves.  Be mindful that chronic pain can lead to a sense of loneliness and isolation, so when your partner wants to talk about their pain, be sure to be available with a listening ear.
  2. Recognise Pain Triggers: Your partner may try to push through discomfort which could lead to worsened pain. Take a mental note of situations that cause/ worsen your partner’s symptoms.
  3. Encourage Fun: Chronic pain does not necessarily mean that your partner feels the same level of pain every day. Your partner may even feel better/ worse at certain times of the day.  During good days or less symptomatic periods, encourage your partner to do fun things instead of everyday mundane chores.
  4. Watch Out for Non-Verbal Pain Cues: Remember that your partner doesn’t talk about their pain each and every time they feel it. Keep an eye out for any non-verbal pain cues, such as facial expressions, slowed gait or groaning. Ask your partner how they feel during these situations and offer a helpful hand.
  5. Take a Joint Approach to Treatment: Understanding your partner’s pain will make it easier for you to show empathy and provide support. If you are able to, consider going along to your partner’s health care visits so that you can learn more about your partner’s condition and what activities should be encouraged.


Valentine’s Day may be around the corner, but showing real love is so much more than chocolates and red roses.

Chiropractic and the different affects on the brain body connection


Chiropractic care has a multitude of effects on the Spine and nervous system and therefore your health, the adjustments we mentioned in the last blog are the main cause of these beneficial effects and impact different aspects;

-Autonomic nervous System
-Proprioception
-Immunity

The brain is the master control system for the entire body. It sends and receives a complicated frequency of signals with the body that dictate the function of the body. When there is interference in this neurological feedback loop, it alters the environment the brain perceives itself to be in; this consequently changes the adaptation processes the brain orchestrates throughout the body. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to enhance the sensorimotor integration of the brain with the body.



Many experts have hypothesized that increased stress cycles in the body produce the environment for dis-ease and eventually disease within the body. 

Stress can come from a variety of sources in the mental/emotional form, chemical form, and physical realm.


When the body is under increased stress it responds by increasing its sympathetic tone. This means the body shunts itself into "fight or flight" survival based mode by altering cardiovascular & endocrine function to get itself ready for dynamic activity.



Increased sympathetic tone causes a release of stress hormones such as adrenaline, epinephrine, and cortisol. This is the same response we get when we are anxious or exercising. 
This is okay if it is for a short period of time; however, when the stress lasts longer than expected it exhausts the body and causes a state of dis-ease to manifest.


When the brain sends information to the organs, muscles, and tissues of the body, this is called efferent neurological flow. In return, the afferent flow of information includes all the messages sent to the brain from skin, muscle, joint, and organ receptors. This afferent/efferent neurological loop is how the body is able to respond and adapt appropriately to its environment.



The ramifications of increased stress hormones in the body include overworked adrenal glands, lowered immunity, decreased digestive functions, fatigue, & blood pressure disturbances. Increased cortisol levels also cause ligament laxity by stripping critical proteins from the tendon and ligament structures. This causes joint weakness throughout the body, including the spine and extremities, making them much more susceptible to injury.





Physical stress on the body and therefore increase the sympathetic tone, so the body shunts its energy toward the fight or flight system. If the dysfunctions are not corrected they continue to produce this increased stress response. This increases cortisol and causes greater joint & ligament laxity in the spine and extremities making them more susceptible to injury. Additionally, increased long-term stress on the body greatly accelerates the degenerative processes of the spine and joints leading to osteoarthritis.



Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to normalize spinal afferent/efferent processes to their proper resting tone. This is like hitting the reset button on the computer when it is malfunctioning. The computer is allowed to pause and reprocess itself. Chiropractic adjustments reduces the stress response and helps to restore normal hormonal and cardiovascular function to the body. This allows the body to reset itself and begin healing the damage that was done in the body due to chronic stress cycles.

How a Chiropractor specifically helps spinal conditions

In our last Blog we looked at what a Chiropractor is and why the Nervous system plays an important role in our health.

Chiropractors mostly use manual therapy (i.e their hands) to provide care but some also use other tools to help, however arguably the most important and effective aspect of chiropractic care is the adjustment!

The spine has 24 movable joints known as vertebrae, and these can become misaligned or dysfunctional.

A chiropractor will first identify which of your vertebra may be misaligned or dysfunctional and how they relate to your symptoms.  a vertebra which has lost its normal position and/or motion in relation to neighbouring vertebrae. 

Vertebrae which do not function properly within the spinal framework generate mechanical stress. This accelerates the wear and tear on the surrounding spinal muscles, ligaments, discs, joint and other spinal tissues. Pain, palpatory tenderness, inflammation, decreased spinal mobility, and muscle spasm and hypertonicity will eventually follow.



There are 5 main components of a misaligned or dysfunctional vertebra and they are;

  • Kinesiopathology – the loss of normal vertebral positioning and motion in relation to neighbouring vertebra.
  • Myopathology – pathological changes occurring in the spinal musculature which includes hypertonicity, spasming, fibrosis, weakness and improper or inappropriate functioning.
  • Neuropathology – irritation or injury to spinal nerve roots through compression, stretch or more commonly chemical irritation from nearby spinal structures
  • Histopathology – pathological changes which occur to the spinal tissues such as abnormal bony growths off the vertebral bodies and joints, fibrosis and adhesions of spinal muscles and ligaments, as well as dehydration and degeneration of spinal discs.
  • Pathophysiology – the biochemical changes taking place in the spinal region which include inflammatory biochemicals from injured tissues and biochemical waste products



What is an adjustment?

An adjustment is a highly skilled and precise movement usually applied by hand to a joint of the body. Adjustment loosens the joint to restore proper movement and optimize function.

When a joint is adjusted, a gas bubble escapes causing the popping noise you may have heard about.
Chiropractic adjustment techniques have been researched extensively. Complications are rare and side-effects, such as temporary soreness, are usually minor. Your chiropractor is well-trained to determine if your problem will respond to chiropractic care or if you require referral to another health care provider

What is a Chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a health care professional focused on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, with an emphasis on treatment through manual adjustment and/or manipulation of the spine.
Most chiropractors seek to reduce pain and improve the functionality of patients as well as to educate them on how they can account for their own health via exercise, ergonomics and other therapies to treat back pain.

Why the Spine?

The questions is why or how does the spine play an important role in our health.
It’s not necessarily the spine that’s important but what it contains, which is the nervous system. Your Central nervous controls and coordinates all functions in the body. Not only does your spine protect your nervous system it is also designed to move.

If there was a change in structure or function of your spine the knock-on affect would impact your nervous system and its ability to function normally. Any alteration of spinal structure or function may cause irritation of the central nervous system or the outer spinal nerves that are protected as they travel to organs or muscles. Repeated physical stresses or instantly in a physical accident, but often it is brought on by too much psychological stress or lifestyle factors like inadequate nutrition or exercise.
